Green Adventures!

We drive a car that runs on used vegetable oil and we built a straw bale house... we thought this might be a fun way to document our adventures and maybe, in turn, help others who decide to give it a go as well. Note: If you are interested in reading about the building of our straw bale house check out the blog archive (on the right side a little ways down) from 2008- when we began our research and 2009- when we actually constructed the house.

What is a straw bale house?

Straw is what is left over after the wheat/barley/hay/etc. is harvested. It is not useful for anything other than farm animals to lay...often it is burned polluting the air. When it is baled tightly it has an R-value of 32-53 (depending on the size of the bale). A straw bale home is up to 3 times more efficient than a well insulated "regular" home. The bales are stacked to form walls and then covered with earthen plaster (clay, dirt, straw, color pigment, etc). Straw bale houses are more efficient, more fire proof, and more earthquake proof than a regular stick built house!

What is a grease car?

A grease car is a vehicle that runs on waste vegetable oil. The engine of the vehicle must be diesel. An additional heated fuel tank is installed (usually in the trunk) to store the used vegetable oil and lines run from there, under the car, to the engine. The car then has the capability of running on diesel or vegetable oil. For more specific details and frequently asked questions visit: greasecar.com.
